Gate 2

Gate 2, formally known as the second season of the Gate anime series, was produced by A-1 Pictures and aired in 2016. It serves as a direct continuation of the fantasy-military narrative based on the light novel series by Takumi Yanai, which centers on a portal appearing in modern-day Tokyo that connects to a world reminiscent of medieval fantasy. The production aimed to expand upon the geopolitical friction between the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the inhabitants of the 'Special Region' introduced in the first installment.

The character designs for the series were adapted by Jun Nakai, who sought to maintain a balance between the military aesthetic of the modern characters and the high-fantasy appearance of the indigenous population. Upon its release, the series received attention for its unconventional premise of modern technology interacting with a magic-based society, though it was also the subject of critical discussion regarding its portrayal of nationalism and military power dynamics within the medium of anime.
