32 years have passed since the initial defeat of the Invaders. A.E.G.I.S is all but dismantled now and has become an underground organiziation consisting of only a few Gate Keepers left to save humanity. One of the members, Ayane Isuzu, is sick of society as a whole, though she continues to defeat the Invaders out of spite for her father. Suddenly, she learns of the revival of Machine General (Kikai Shogun) and Devil Count (Akuma Hakushaku), but a mysterious ghost girl now accompanies them. It is up to Ayane and the remnants of A.E.G.I.S to stop them and save humanity once again.

Where it came from
Gate Keepers 21 was released in 2002 as a six-episode original video animation series, serving as a sequel to the 2000 television anime Gate Keepers. Produced by Studio GONZO, the series shifted the tone of the franchise significantly, moving away from the lighthearted, retro-futuristic aesthetic of the original show toward a more somber, character-driven narrative centered on a near-future Japan threatened by an alien force known as the Invaders.
The animation was directed by Yasuhiro Irie, who sought to emphasize a more grounded and mature visual style compared to the source material. By focusing on a smaller, more intimate cast of characters, the production team aimed to explore themes of grief and resilience. While the series was generally well-received by fans of the original for its technical polish and ambitious tonal shift, it remains a distinct entry that stands apart from the broader, more whimsical Gate Keepers universe.
