It's the start of a new year for the Genshiken crew, and that means recruiting new members. Always a dreaded task, The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture manages to get Chika Ogiue pushed onto them from the Manga Club. With her introduction of "I'm Ogiue and I hate otaku", this year certainly will be anything but boring.

Where it came from
The Genshiken OVA series was released in 2006 to bridge the narrative gap between the first and second seasons of the anime adaptation. Produced by Genco and animated by Studio Kio, this three-episode project serves as a direct continuation of the story, focusing on the day-to-day lives of members of the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture. The OVA format allowed the creators to delve into specific character arcs and comedic vignettes that were essential for adapting the tone of Shimoku Kio’s original manga more faithfully for its dedicated fanbase.
The design of the OVA maintains the aesthetic established in the 2004 television series, emphasizing a grounded, slice-of-life visual style that captures the distinct subcultural atmosphere of the mid-2000s otaku scene. By shifting focus toward the club members' graduation and their burgeoning personal relationships, the project aimed to provide a more poignant and mature exploration of the transition from college life to adulthood. It was received warmly by enthusiasts for its self-aware humor and its honest, often critical portrayal of the very hobbyist community that consumed it.
