Where it came from
The Genshiken Second Generation OVA was produced by Studio I.G and released in 2013 to accompany the limited edition of the manga's seventeenth volume. It serves as a bridge and companion piece to the second anime television series, continuing the narrative of the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture as the club navigates internal dynamics, changing membership, and the complexities of otaku culture in a university setting.
The animation reflects the shift in tone and character focus seen in the manga's later chapters, balancing comedic meta-commentary with earnest character development. Fans of the franchise generally received the OVA as a faithful expansion of the source material, appreciating how the studio maintained the grounded, slice-of-life aesthetic that defined the series since its debut, capturing the nuanced evolution of the club members as they approach adulthood.
