Where it came from
Ghost Stories, known in Japan as Gakkō no Kaidan, was produced by Studio Pierrot and originally aired in 2001. The series was based on a popular book series by Tōru Tsunemitsu. While the original Japanese production was intended as a sincere, if somewhat formulaic, horror-adventure series for children, it faced a rocky reception due to low ratings during its initial broadcast run.
The series became a global cult phenomenon following its acquisition by ADV Films for the North American market. Diverging from the original tone, the English dub writers were given creative license to reinvent the show as a satirical, dark comedy. This decision transformed the perception of the franchise, turning a largely forgotten studio project into a widely discussed piece of animation history known for its improvisational humor.
