Where it came from
Gibiate was produced in 2020 by the studio l-a-unch・BOX as a collaborative multimedia project involving notable Japanese creators. The series was conceived by Yoshitaka Amano, a legendary artist known for his work on the Final Fantasy series, who contributed character designs. The premise centers on a samurai and a ninja transported from the Edo period to a post-apocalyptic future plagued by a virus that transforms humans into monsters, blending historical action with science fiction horror themes.
The production sought to merge traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern animation techniques, drawing on Amano's distinct, ethereal visual style. Despite high expectations surrounding the talent involved, the series faced significant criticism upon release. Audiences and critics generally cited issues with the animation quality, pacing, and narrative structure, leading to a polarizing reception that contrasted sharply with the prestige of its creative team.
