Gintama: Love Incense Arc

The Love Incense Arc was released in 2016 as a two-part original video animation series, serving as a special adaptation of the comedic and often chaotic manga Gintama by Hideaki Sorachi. Produced by Bandai Namco Pictures, the arc was conceptualized to offer a distinct, self-contained narrative that highlighted the series' signature blend of absurdity and character-driven humor. It emerged during a period of high output for the franchise, designed to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the Yorozuya trio while testing new narrative experiments outside of the standard broadcast television schedule.

Directed by Chizuru Miyawaki, the animation direction aimed to maintain the sharp, expressive visual language established in the main series while allowing for the heightened, surreal aesthetic required by the plot's central premise. The arc was generally well-received by the existing fanbase, as it effectively balanced the series' tendency for raunchy, unconventional tropes with the heartfelt camaraderie that defines the core relationships. By focusing on a specific, contained storyline, the production team was able to refine the character designs and pacing to suit a shorter format, solidifying its place as a standout entry in the broader Gintama discography.
