Gintama on Theater 2D: Kintama-hen

Gintama on Theater 2D: Kintama-hen was released in 2024 as part of a theatrical retrospective celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Hideaki Sorachi’s influential manga series. This specific installment revisits the pivotal 'Kintama' arc, a meta-narrative sequence where the protagonist Gintoki Sakata is replaced by a golden-haired android named Kintoki, effectively rebooting the show's premise within the story itself. The project was produced by Bandai Namco Pictures, the studio responsible for the series' transition to long-form animation, intended to bring the chaotic, subversive humor of the arc to a big-screen format for long-term fans.

The animation maintains the distinct visual language established by the long-running television series, characterized by a balance of slapstick humor, abrupt tonal shifts, and fourth-wall-breaking commentary. By recontextualizing the Kintama arc—originally aired in 2012—for a 2024 theatrical audience, the studio aimed to capitalize on the enduring cultural footprint of the franchise. It was received as a nostalgic event for the community, serving as both a refresher on one of the series' most iconic subversions and a tribute to the dedicated fanbase that has followed Gintoki’s unpredictable journey for two decades.
