Where it came from
Yorinuki Gintama-san on Theater 2D was released in 2012 as a cinematic compilation of select episodes from the long-running Gintama anime series produced by Sunrise. This project served as a theatrical distillation of the show's chaotic humor and poignant character arcs, specifically designed to reintroduce the series to audiences in a high-definition format during a period when the television production was between major story arcs.
The film was crafted to maintain the irreverent tone established by original series director Shinji Takamatsu and the animation team at Sunrise. By curating fan-favorite moments and remastering the visuals for the big screen, the studio aimed to celebrate the legacy of Hideaki Sorachi’s manga. It was received by the core fanbase as a nostalgic touchstone that honored the series' unique blend of slapstick comedy and emotional depth.
