Girls' Weekend Class

Girls' Weekend Class, known in Japan as Joshikousei no Mudazukai, originated as a web manga series before being adapted into a 2017 ONA series by Studio PuYUKAI. Produced during a period when the studio was gaining recognition for its distinctively simplified, super-deformed aesthetic, the project aimed to translate the comedic timing of the original manga into a short-form, episodic animation format. It was designed to capture the mundane yet chaotic interactions of high school students, utilizing a minimalist visual style that emphasizes expressive character shorthand over complex backgrounds.

The reception of the series was largely driven by its quirky sense of humor and the studio’s signature approach to character design, which prioritizes comedic impact through exaggerated reactions. By stripping away intricate detail, the creators allowed the pacing of the sketches to take precedence, fitting the constraints of the ONA medium. While the series maintains a niche following, it is frequently cited by fans of the studio’s broader portfolio for its ability to convey a specific, relatable energy within a very compact runtime.
