Where it came from
Given the Movie was released in 2020 as a direct continuation of the anime series adaptation of Natsuki Kizu’s popular manga. Produced by studio Lerche and directed by Hikaru Yamaguchi, the film serves as a pivotal chapter focusing on the complex relationship between bassist Haruki Nakayama and drummer Akihiko Kaji. The production aimed to maintain the atmospheric, emotionally resonant tone of the television series while utilizing the feature-length format to provide a deeper exploration of the characters' internal struggles and evolving musical collaboration.
The film was received as a significant entry in the boys' love genre, noted for its grounded approach to romance and its emphasis on the technical aspects of musical performance. The visual direction by Lerche was praised for its delicate character animation, which captures the subtle emotional cues of the source material. By focusing on the secondary romantic arc established in the manga, the movie expanded the franchise's narrative scope, cementing its reputation for character-driven storytelling rather than relying solely on traditional genre tropes.
