GOOD-MOURNING

Good-Mourning was produced by Geidai Animation, the renowned animation program at Tokyo University of the Arts, known for fostering unique, experimental voices in the Japanese independent animation scene. The film emerged from a tradition of academic rigor combined with artistic autonomy, allowing students to explore complex, often melancholic themes through diverse illustrative techniques that deviate from commercial industry standards.

The project reflects the distinct creative sensibilities of its creators, who favored an atmospheric approach to storytelling. By focusing on nuanced character studies and deliberate pacing, the film captures a specific mid-2010s movement in student-led independent cinema that prioritized emotional resonance over traditional narrative structure. It was received within academic and film festival circles as a poignant example of the artistic potential held by the university’s animation department.
