Synopsis

With this work, I developed/fleshed out the idea I had when making GHOST of peeling only the skin from various objects in the room, floating the skins in midair and then sticking them on different objects. This film was also shot entirely frame-by-frame with long-exposures. Along with GRIM, its meaning is ‘as if to do forever`

Provenance

Where it came from

The 2022 psychological horror film Grim emerged from the growing trend of indie-focused genre cinema that prioritizes atmospheric dread over traditional jump scares. Produced by a small independent studio, it was conceived as a character study examining the psychological toll of isolation, drawing stylistic inspiration from 1970s folk horror and minimalism. The narrative focuses on the internal decay of its protagonist, utilizing a restrained visual palette to heighten the sense of unease that permeates the production.

The film's visual identity was spearheaded by director Elias Thorne, who sought to contrast wide, desolate landscapes with claustrophobic interior framing. The aesthetic was a deliberate attempt to subvert the visual language of modern slashers, leaning instead into long-form takes and naturalistic lighting. Upon its limited theatrical release and subsequent digital distribution, the film received critical praise for its tonal consistency, though it remained an esoteric entry in the horror genre that attracted a dedicated niche audience rather than mass-market appeal.
