Where it came from
Grimm's Notes The Animation was produced by studio Brain's Base and released in early 2019 as a television adaptation of the mobile role-playing game developed by Square Enix. The series was designed to translate the game's premise—a world where every individual is born with a pre-written destiny from a book—into an episodic fantasy format. By featuring various figures from folklore and classic fairy tales, the show aimed to explore themes of choice and identity within a structured narrative framework.
The production sought to capture the distinct aesthetic of the original source material while streamlining the game's expansive roster of heroes for a linear viewing experience. Directed by Seiki Sugawara, the animation prioritized a vibrant, classic adventure tone, though it received mixed critical reception for its attempt to condense complex game mechanics into a twelve-episode run. It remains a notable example of late-2010s mobile game-to-anime adaptations, reflecting the era's trend of utilizing established franchise intellectual property to drive cross-platform engagement.
