Where it came from
Guilty Crown: Lost Christmas was released in 2012 as an original video animation (OVA) bundled with the visual novel game of the same name. Produced by Studio Production I.G, it serves as a prequel to the main Guilty Crown television series, focusing on the mysterious character Carol and providing context for the events leading up to the series' titular apocalyptic incident. The project was intended to expand the franchise's lore for dedicated fans who engaged with the accompanying interactive media.
The animation maintains the aesthetic hallmarks established by the original series, emphasizing high-contrast visuals and an atmospheric, synth-heavy tone. Production I.G utilized the release to deepen the character development of the protagonist, Scrooge, while refining the visual motifs associated with the Void system. It was received primarily by the existing fanbase as a supplementary piece, appreciated for its technical polish and its efforts to flesh out the dark, dystopian backstory of the Guilty Crown universe.
