Gundam vs Hello Kitty

The Gundam vs Hello Kitty project was launched in 2019 to celebrate two massive milestones in Japanese pop culture: the 40th anniversary of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise and the 45th anniversary of Hello Kitty. The collaboration was initiated as a friendly, high-profile promotional campaign that bridged the gap between the gritty, mecha-centric world of Gundam and the kawaii aesthetic of Sanrio, utilizing a series of short animated clips to tell a humorous story of inter-franchise competition.

The animation was produced by Sunrise, the studio responsible for the Gundam series, which treated the project with surprising sincerity by maintaining the visual language of the original anime. The narrative centered on Hello Kitty attempting to bridge the divide between herself and the Gundam pilot Amuro Ray, resulting in a meta-commentary that delighted fans by blending stark space warfare with Sanrio's trademark whimsy. The resulting ONA series was received as a lighthearted, self-aware marketing triumph that demonstrated the versatility of both long-standing intellectual properties.
