Guy: Double Target

Guy: Double Target was released in 1988 as an original video animation produced by Studio Friends. Emerging during the late 1980s golden age of the direct-to-video market in Japan, the production sought to capitalize on the rising popularity of gritty, action-oriented science fiction narratives that flourished away from the constraints of television broadcast standards. The project was intended to serve as a standalone showcase of high-stakes, futuristic combat, leaning into the darker aesthetic sensibilities that were defining the cyberpunk-adjacent trends of the period.

The animation reflects the collaborative efforts of the studio's team, aiming to deliver kinetic, stylized action sequences that favored visceral impact over complex world-building. While it was received by audiences as a quintessential example of its era's experimental OVA landscape, it remains a niche artifact. Its design focuses on the tropes of the underground mercenary genre, emphasizing sleek, utilitarian character designs and mechanical details that were characteristic of the industrial-futuristic visual language popular among Japanese animators during the final years of the decade.
