Tall, blonde and blue-eyed, it is impossible not to notice Isak Borg, First Secretary to the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang. As a diplomat, he is under constant surveillance and strongly discouraged from interacting with the locals. Despite this, he secretly dates Bok-joo, a local traffic officer, but when one last effort to extend his stay is rejected, Isak begs her to come back to Stockholm with him. Bok-joo turns this idea down and abruptly disappears. Oblivious to the danger he is putting the woman he loves in, Isak asks Myeong-jun, his assigned interpreter, for help. When Myeong-jun refuses, a desperate Isak becomes increasingly suspicious of everyone.

Where it came from
Gwangjang, produced by the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), stands as a notable example of the institution's commitment to fostering independent and experimental filmmaking in South Korea. The film emerged from the academy’s rigorous pedagogical environment, where emerging directors are encouraged to push the boundaries of narrative structure and visual storytelling. By providing a creative space for up-and-coming talent, KAFA has established itself as a cornerstone of the Korean cinematic landscape, frequently producing works that challenge mainstream commercial conventions.
The production process at KAFA emphasizes the collaborative nature of filmmaking, often resulting in projects that reflect a distinct collective aesthetic while highlighting the vision of the individual director. These films are typically noted for their minimalist production values and focus on character-driven narratives, a trait common among student-led productions from the academy. Upon release, works from this production arm are generally received within the festival circuit and academic circles as insightful contributions to the contemporary Korean independent scene, serving as a testament to the school's role in shaping the next generation of filmmakers.
