Where it came from
Hai Step Jun was produced by Toei Animation and aired in Japan starting in 1985. It emerged during a period when Toei was actively exploring themes of youth, school life, and personal determination in its animated programming. The series follows the journey of Jun, a young protagonist striving to succeed in both athletics and academics, reflecting the cultural emphasis on perseverance and the balance between extracurricular activities and rigorous schooling common in mid-1980s Japanese media.
The series design was heavily influenced by the visual trends of 1980s shōnen and sports anime, characterized by energetic character expressions and clear, simplified line work meant to emphasize the fast-paced motion of the sports sequences. While it did not reach the global cultural dominance of some of Toei's other franchises, it remains a notable example of the studio's mid-decade efforts to capture the interest of adolescent viewers through relatable, high-stakes narratives.
