Where it came from
Hakuouki: Otogisoushi was produced in 2016 by Studio DLE as a lighthearted, comedic spin-off of the serious Hakuouki historical drama franchise. The project was conceived to offer a refreshing departure from the intense, tragic narrative of the original visual novels and anime series, opting instead for a chibi-style aesthetic that highlights the daily lives and eccentricities of the Shinsengumi characters.
The animation and character designs were crafted to emphasize a cute, simplified visual language, a signature style for DLE, which is widely recognized for its Flash-animated comedy shorts. While the series was met with interest from established fans looking for a humorous palate cleanser, it remains distinct from the core Hakuouki canon, serving primarily as a playful celebration of the beloved cast rather than a continuation of their central war-time story.
