Where it came from
Hanada Shounen-shi, adapted from the manga by Makoto Isshiki, was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and first aired in 2002. The series centers on Ichiro Hanada, a mischievous young boy who gains the ability to communicate with spirits after a near-death experience, blending dark comedy with supernatural drama and nostalgic period aesthetics set in 1970s Japan.
The production was helmed by director Masayuki Kojima, who sought to capture the emotional depth and rural charm of the original manga. It received significant critical praise for its poignant storytelling and mature handling of themes regarding mortality and family reconciliation, eventually earning the Excellence Prize for Animation at the 2003 Japan Media Arts Festival.
