Where it came from
Happy World! is a three-episode original video animation series released in 2002 by the animation studio KSS. Based on the manga by Kenjiro Takeshita, the story centers on a young man who unknowingly creates a portal to a different dimension, leading to the arrival of supernatural beings in his life. It emerged during a period when the 'moe' aesthetic and supernatural romantic comedy subgenres were becoming increasingly prominent in the Japanese animation industry.
The character designs and animation direction sought to balance traditional slapstick comedy with the darker, more surreal elements of the source material. While the series did not reach the heights of major studio productions, it serves as a representative example of the niche direct-to-video market of the early 2000s, reflecting the era's experimentation with blending high-concept fantasy with everyday domestic settings.
