Hatena Illusion

Hatena Illusion, a 2020 television series animated by Children's Playground Entertainment, is based on the light novel series written by Tomohiro Matsu. The production was marked by significant challenges, as the project was originally intended to be released years earlier but faced multiple delays following the untimely death of the author in 2016. The story follows a young boy named Makoto Shiranui who moves to Tokyo to become an apprentice to a magician, only to discover that the mansion he arrives at is haunted and tied to his own family history.

The series focuses on themes of stage magic and mystery, blending fantasy elements with a romantic comedy structure. Visually, the production aimed to capture the whimsical aesthetic of the original light novel illustrations, though the final animated work received a mixed reception from viewers and critics. Many cited the long delay between the source material's initial popularity and the eventual broadcast as a factor that complicated the show's ability to resonate with modern audiences, ultimately leaving it as a niche title within the broader landscape of late-2010s anime.
