Hazard Symbol

The modern international hazard symbol, specifically the trefoil design representing ionizing radiation, was conceived in 1946 at the University of California, Berkeley Radiation Laboratory. Researchers needed a distinct, intuitive warning sign to mark radioactive materials that was simple enough to be understood by individuals regardless of their language or technical background. The original design featured a magenta trefoil on a blue background, chosen because these colors were not typically used for other industrial signage at the time.

The design underwent refinements over the following decades to enhance its legibility and standardized application. While the original magenta and blue color scheme persisted in some academic and laboratory settings, the now-ubiquitous black and yellow version became the global standard for public-facing signage, favored for its high contrast and association with caution. It remains one of the most recognizable icons of the atomic age, serving as a vital communicative tool in nuclear medicine, research, and energy sectors.
