Haze Haseru Hateru Made

Haze Haseru Hateru Made is a significant conceptual work by the Japanese artist and musician Keigo Oyamada, widely known by his stage name Cornelius. Released as part of his multimedia creative output in the late 1990s, the piece reflects the Shibuya-kei movement's experimental ethos, blending disparate musical textures with a highly curated visual aesthetic. It serves as a distillation of the era's fascination with cut-and-paste collage techniques, both aurally and physically, marking a shift toward more ambient, introspective compositions that prioritized texture over traditional song structures.

The design of the work is characterized by a minimalist, almost clinical presentation that contrasts with the density of the soundscape within. By stripping away excess ornamentation, Oyamada allowed the conceptual weight of the title—which touches on themes of transience and the passage of time—to take precedence. Critics at the time noted the work's departure from the frenetic energy of his earlier records, viewing it as a mature exploration of the tension between artifice and authenticity, solidifying Cornelius's reputation as a pivotal figure in modern Japanese avant-pop.
