Hei Xue

Hei Xue, known internationally as Black Snow, is a 2017 Chinese original net animation produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures. The series emerged during a period of rapid expansion for the Chinese streaming market, specifically targeting the growing demand for mature, stylized 2D animation within the domestic digital landscape. It was conceived as a shorter-form experiment, aiming to showcase high-fidelity aesthetic choices and a distinct narrative tone that departed from the more traditional, long-running web series prevalent on platforms like Tencent Video at the time.

The visual design of the series is noted for its moody, monochromatic-leaning palette and a focus on fluid, kinetic action sequences. Produced under the Penguin Pictures banner, the project served as part of a broader strategy to diversify the studio's portfolio beyond standard adaptations. While it was received as a niche entry, it is frequently cited by critics of the medium for its technical ambition and its role in bridging the gap between independent animation aesthetics and the high-production values supported by major Chinese tech conglomerates.
