Where it came from
Helck originated as a web manga written and illustrated by Nanaki Nanao, which serialized from 2014 to 2017 before being adapted into a television anime series by Studio Satelight in 2023. The narrative subverts high-fantasy tropes by depicting a powerful hero who ostensibly seeks to destroy humanity, creating a comedic yet increasingly dark tone that distinguishes it from traditional action-adventure titles.
The 2023 adaptation was directed by Tatsuo Sato, who aimed to preserve the shifting emotional resonance of Nanao's original work. The production was noted for its transition from slapstick humor to more complex character-driven drama, reflecting the studio's attempt to balance the series' rapid tonal shifts while maintaining visual consistency across its multi-cour run.
