Heibai Long Lang Zhuan

Heibai Long Lang Zhuan, or The Legend of the Black and White Dragon, is a landmark entry in the glove puppetry tradition known as Pili. Produced by Pili International Multimedia in the late 1980s, the series serves as a foundational piece in the expansive Wuxia universe created by the Huang family. It was developed to elevate traditional Taiwanese glove puppetry by integrating sophisticated cinematography, intricate costume design, and a serialized narrative structure that drew heavily from classical Chinese martial arts literature.

The series is centered on the iconic characters Heibai Langjun and Shi Yanwen, whose philosophical and martial conflicts anchor the storytelling. The visual design was spearheaded by the Huang brothers, who sought to transition the art form from local stage performances to television screens. The production received significant acclaim for its meticulous puppetry craftsmanship and the innovative use of pyrotechnics and practical effects, establishing the high production standards that define the Pili franchise to this day.
