Where it came from
Heibai Wushuang 2, or Black and White Warriors 2, was produced by Wawayu Animation as a direct sequel to the 2015 animated series based on the manhua by Yu Yan Shu. The series fits into the mid-2010s movement of Chinese animation studios aiming to adapt popular digital comics into high-quality ONA formats, focusing on supernatural themes and the traditional Chinese mythology surrounding the messengers of death.
The design of the series centers on the balance between the two protagonists, Hei and Bai, exploring their responsibilities in the afterlife. The art direction emphasizes a blend of modern cel-shaded aesthetics with traditional ink-wash inspired backgrounds, a signature choice by Wawayu intended to modernize the source material's visual identity for a streaming-first audience.
