Hello Kitty no Oyayubi-hime

Released in 1990, Hello Kitty no Oyayubi-hime, or Hello Kitty’s Thumbelina, was produced by Sanrio as part of their long-running effort to adapt classic Western fairy tales into animated featurettes starring their signature character. During this era, Sanrio sought to expand the Hello Kitty brand beyond stationery and merchandise, positioning her as a versatile narrative figure capable of anchoring wholesome, family-oriented storytelling that would appeal to global audiences.

The film was designed in the characteristic soft, pastel aesthetic that defined late 1980s and early 1990s Sanrio animation. The production emphasized character-driven charm over complex animation techniques, aiming to provide a comforting and gentle viewing experience for children. Like other installments in the Sanrio World of Animation series, it received a modest reception, primarily finding its audience through direct-to-video distribution and television broadcasts, solidifying its place as a nostalgic staple for fans of the franchise.
