Where it came from
Hero Mask was released in 2018 as an original net animation, or ONA, produced by Studio Pierrot and distributed internationally by Netflix. The series was written and directed by Hiroyukiitsu, known for his work on various action-oriented anime projects. The production emerged during a period of significant investment by streaming platforms into original Japanese animation, aiming to blend high-octane police procedural elements with science-fiction concepts centered around a mysterious, reality-altering mask.
The design aesthetic of the series leans into a crisp, modern digital animation style characteristic of late 2010s studio productions, focusing on fluid action sequences and a gritty, metropolitan atmosphere. While it drew comparisons to classic cyberpunk and hard-boiled detective fiction, the series received mixed critical reception, with many reviewers noting its ambition in narrative scope while pointing to the challenges inherent in balancing a complex conspiratorial plot within the constraints of a single-season format.
