Higanjima X

Higanjima X debuted in 2016 as a series of short-form original net animation episodes produced by Studio Tetra. The project was adapted from Koji Matsumoto’s long-running survival horror manga series, Higanjima, which follows a group of teenagers who travel to a remote, vampire-infested island to rescue a lost sibling. This particular adaptation was conceived as a comedic, fast-paced reinterpretation, utilizing a distinctively frantic visual style that prioritized absurdity and rapid-fire dialogue over the grim atmosphere of the original print source.

The production is notable for its unconventional voice acting approach, where comedian Shoji Yamashiro voiced all characters in early episodes, a creative choice that emphasized the parody elements of the ONA. While the reception was mixed among traditional fans of the horror manga, it gained a cult following for its unpredictable pacing and its departure from standard anime tropes. The series serves as an experimental example of how web-based platforms allowed studios to strip down complex narratives into bite-sized, stylized segments during the mid-2010s.
