Where it came from
High School DxD NEW is the second season of the anime adaptation based on the light novel series by Ichiei Ishibumi, produced by the studio TNK and released in 2013. Following the success of the first season, this continuation was commissioned to further adapt the narrative of Issei Hyodo and his entanglement with the Occult Research Club. The production aimed to maintain the series' signature blend of supernatural action and harem tropes, continuing the visual style established by character designer Junji Goto, whose work focuses on highly stylized, exaggerated character aesthetics intended to appeal directly to the show's core demographic.
The series was licensed for North American distribution by Funimation, which managed the English-language localization and home video releases. Upon its release, the series became a notable example of the ecchi genre’s mainstream expansion within the western market during the early 2010s. While critics often highlight its heavy reliance on fan service and trope-driven comedy, the series solidified a dedicated following, securing its place in the modern catalog of popular supernatural harem anime.
