Where it came from
The High School DxD OVA, released in 2012 by studio TNK under the production of Genco, was created as a direct-to-video companion to the first season of the anime adaptation based on Ichiei Ishibumi’s light novel series. This episode was bundled with the limited edition release of the thirteenth volume of the light novels, serving as an expansion of the franchise's supernatural comedy narrative that centers on the protagonist Issei Hyodo. It was designed to provide fans with additional content that adhered closely to the source material's blend of high-stakes fantasy combat and explicit fan service, which had become the hallmark of the series since its debut.
The production team, led by director Tetsuya Yanagisawa and character designer Junji Goto, focused on maintaining the visual consistency established in the televised episodes while utilizing the OVA format to explore more relaxed, episodic storytelling. Because the franchise originated from a popular series of light novels, the animation choices were heavily influenced by Miyama-Zero’s original illustrations. Upon its release, the OVA was received primarily as a collector's piece for dedicated fans of the show, solidifying the series' standing within the 'ecchi' fantasy subgenre of the early 2010s.
