Where it came from
High Score, released in 2011, is a comedic anime series produced by the Japanese studio DLE, which is widely recognized for its distinctive Flash-animation style. The series was developed during a period when DLE was focusing on short-form, rapid-fire comedic content intended for late-night television slots, often utilizing a minimalist aesthetic to highlight sharp dialogue and satirical takes on pop culture.
The series focuses on the daily lives and social dynamics of high school students with an emphasis on gaming culture, drawing inspiration from the long-running manga series by Makoto Kanda. The adaptation prioritized a humorous, episodic structure that captured the awkwardness of adolescent social interactions, utilizing DLE's signature low-frame-rate animation to lean into the absurdity of the source material's comedic timing.
