Where it came from
Himitsu no Hanazono, or The Secret Garden, was produced by NHK in 1991 as a Japanese television adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic 1911 novel. The series reflects a period in Japanese broadcasting where international literature was frequently reimagined for local audiences, often through a blend of live-action drama and distinct production values characteristic of NHK’s long-running efforts to provide high-quality family programming.
The adaptation was designed to translate the Victorian themes of the original text into a setting that resonated with Japanese viewers, emphasizing the evocative and atmospheric elements of the hidden garden itself. While specific credits for the production designers are often subsumed into the studio’s collective output, the series is noted for its faithful, gentle tone and the period-appropriate aesthetic that was intended to capture the introspective growth of its young protagonist.
