Thomas is a cunning bird who sponges on Hyppo, the good-natured hippopotamus. Although Thomas is a dependent, living in Hyppo's big mouth, he always acts lordly and tries to outsmart his simpleminded host. However, their basic friendship and cooperation endures despite their frequent quarrels. The two play a prime role in this comic series, short yet full of originality.

Where it came from
Hippo and Thomas was produced in 1971 as part of the BBC's long-running children’s television series Jackanory. The series was designed to encourage reading by having well-known actors narrate popular children’s literature, often accompanied by specifically commissioned illustrations. This particular installment was based on the work of author Ethel Clifford and captured the gentle, whimsical aesthetic characteristic of the era's educational children's programming.
The production utilized simple, evocative visual storytelling to engage a young audience, leaning into the intimacy of a bedside story. While individual episodes of Jackanory were not intended as standalone commercial products, the series itself became a foundational element of British broadcasting history. It remains recognized today for its role in promoting literacy and for the distinctive artistic contributions of the various illustrators tasked with bringing these brief, televised stories to life.
