Where it came from
Hipira-kun Special was released in 2014 as a companion volume to the Hipira: The Little Vampire series, a collaborative project between manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo and illustrator Shinji Kimura. The original work was serialized in Japan starting in 2002, born from a creative partnership that sought to blend gothic atmosphere with a whimsical, child-friendly narrative. The story centers on a young vampire living in a city of vampires, focusing on his curiosity about humans and his friendship with a local soul-collector.
The 2014 special edition serves as a retrospective and a celebration of the unique aesthetic established by Kimura, known for his distinct background art in animation, and Otomo's iconic character design style. The collection was designed to compile visual materials and narrative expansions that highlight the gothic, storybook-like quality of the original manga. It is regarded by fans as a refined look at the duo's collaborative process, reflecting the playful yet polished tone that defined the franchise since its inception.
