Hitori Bocchi suffers from extreme social anxiety, she’s not good at talking to people, takes pretty extreme actions, is surprisingly adept at avoiding people, her legs cramp when she overexerts herself, gets full of herself when alone, will vomit when exposed to extreme tension and often comes up with plans. Now she is entering middle school and her only friend, Yawara Kai, is attending a different school. This leaves Bocchi alone, surrounded by new classmates with whom she must make friends before Kai will talk to her again.

Where it came from
Hitoribocchi no Marumaruseikatsu was produced by Studio C2C and aired in 2019 as an adaptation of the four-panel manga series by Katsuwo. The narrative centers on Bocchi Hitori, a girl with extreme social anxiety who makes a promise to her childhood friend to befriend her entire middle school class. The series was developed as a character-driven slice-of-life comedy, focusing on the incremental personal growth of the protagonist as she navigates the challenges of social interaction.
The animation direction by Takefumi Anzai aimed to capture the gentle, earnest tone of the original manga while emphasizing the expressive, comedic facial reactions that define the series. Upon its release, it was well-received for its heartwarming approach to the themes of friendship and the relatable struggles of those with social difficulties, standing out in a crowded landscape of school-life anime for its sincerity and consistent character development.
