Hitogata

The hitogata is a traditional paper doll used in Shinto rituals, most notably during the Nagoshi no Harae ceremony held in midsummer. These simple, anthropomorphic cutouts serve as a ritual vessel for ritual purification, or harae, intended to transfer a person's impurities or misfortune onto the paper before the dolls are ritually disposed of in water or fire. Their design is deliberately minimalistic, focusing on a human silhouette that allows the participant to write their name and age, facilitating a symbolic bridge between the individual and the kami.

Rooted in ancient Japanese folk belief, the hitogata reflects a deep cultural preoccupation with spiritual cleanliness and renewal. Historically, these items were part of a broader practice of katashiro, where physical representations substituted for the human body during religious rites. While the specific aesthetic may vary slightly by shrine, the design has remained remarkably consistent for centuries, prioritized for its accessibility and functional role in community-wide cleansing ceremonies rather than individual artistic expression.
