Hitotsu dake Kaeta

Hitotsu dake Kaeta, which translates to 'Changed Only One Thing,' is a significant single released by the Japanese singer-songwriter Yumi Arai, later known as Yumi Matsutoya. Emerging from the mid-1970s Japanese new music scene, this track captures the introspective and melancholic folk-pop aesthetic that helped establish Arai as a defining voice in the era's popular music. It reflects the sophisticated songwriting sensibilities she developed alongside collaborators like Tatsuro Yamashita and Masataka Matsutoya, blending poignant lyricism with a meticulously arranged, soft-rock instrumentation that signaled a shift away from traditional folk conventions.

The song is widely regarded as a pinnacle of Arai’s early period, celebrated for its gentle melodic contour and reflective narrative depth. It was composed during a time when Arai was heavily involved in the emerging city pop movement, a genre that prioritized production quality and urban storytelling. Critics and fans often cite the track as a quintessential example of her ability to weave complex, everyday emotions into accessible pop compositions, maintaining a lasting influence on the Japanese singer-songwriter tradition.
