Hong Gil-Dong Janggun

Hong Gil-Dong Janggun, or General Hong Gil-dong, is a 1986 North Korean animated feature film that adapts the legendary tale of the Joseon-era folk hero. Produced by the SEK Studio, the film was part of a state-sponsored initiative to promote national identity and folklore through the medium of animation. The project reflects the specific aesthetic and ideological priorities of North Korean cinema during the mid-1980s, emphasizing heroic struggle and cultural heritage.

The film was directed by Kim Jun-ok and is noted for its ambitious scale compared to earlier North Korean animation efforts. It features a distinct art style that draws on traditional East Asian ink-wash painting aesthetics while utilizing cel animation techniques imported from international studios. While it was widely distributed and celebrated within North Korea as a landmark achievement in domestic animation, international exposure remained limited for decades due to the country's isolationist policies.
