Hong Haier: Juezhan Huoyanshan

Hong Haier: Juezhan Huoyanshan, released in 2005, is a feature-length animated film produced by the China Film Group Corporation. Drawing directly from the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, the film centers on the conflict between the protagonist Sun Wukong and the formidable Red Boy, or Hong Haier. It was conceived as a large-scale attempt to modernize traditional Chinese folklore for a younger, 21st-century audience, utilizing a blend of 2D character animation and digital backgrounds to revitalize the iconic imagery of the Flaming Mountains.

The film’s design reflects a shift in Chinese animation towards more stylized, expressive character work intended to compete with international standards of the era. Directed by Wang Bohua, the production sought to maintain the spiritual essence of the source material while emphasizing high-energy action sequences and accessible humor. Upon its theatrical release, it was received as a noteworthy effort in the domestic film industry, recognized for its ambitious scope and its role in keeping classical literary adaptations relevant within the contemporary animation landscape.
