Hoshi no Ko Chobin

Hoshi no Ko Chobin was produced by Zero Goods Universe and Watanabe Promotion, airing in Japan in 1974. The series emerged during a period of experimentation in the anime industry, as studios sought to capture the imagination of younger audiences through character-driven fables. It follows the story of an alien child named Chobin who arrives on Earth, blending themes of environmentalism with a gentle, whimsical tone typical of mid-seventies children's programming.

The character design, characterized by Chobin's iconic round features and simplistic aesthetic, was overseen by the renowned manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori. Ishinomori aimed to create a protagonist that felt approachable and empathetic, contrasting the more aggressive robot-heavy trends of the era. While the series was not a widespread global phenomenon, it remains a nostalgic touchstone in Japan for its distinct visual style and its early, earnest attempt to weave ecological conservation into an animated narrative.
