Hua Jianghu: Xia Lan

Hua Jianghu: Xia Lan, often referred to as Xia Lan (Morning Sun), emerged as a flagship production from Beijing-based Rocen Animation. Released during a period of rapid expansion for Chinese 3D animation in the early 2010s, the series was designed to blend traditional wuxia elements with high-fantasy martial arts storytelling. It served as a pivotal entry in the studio's portfolio, establishing a signature aesthetic that balanced stylized character modeling with ambitious, core-driven action sequences intended to appeal to a broad demographic of youth and young adult viewers.

The production process prioritized a distinct visual identity, leaning into vibrant, saturated color palettes and elaborate costume designs that drew inspiration from historical fantasy tropes. Under the creative direction of the Rocen team, the animation sought to push the limits of domestic 3D techniques at the time. Upon its debut, the series was well-received for its world-building and complex lore, eventually evolving into a sprawling multimedia franchise that included various sequels and spinoffs within the larger Hua Jianghu universe.
