Legend has it that two demons were jailed in the Calabash Mountains, one a Scorpion spirit and the other a Snake spirit. One day, a pangolin happens to drill a hole on the slope and the two spirits escape from the cave, causing grave harm to the nearby residents. The pangolin hurries to an old man and says that only by growing calabashes in seven colours can they annihilate the spirits. So the old man spares no time in growing seven calabashes, each a different colour of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple.

Where it came from
Hulu Xiongdi, or Calabash Brothers, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and released in 1986. It emerged from a period of artistic experimentation in Chinese animation, utilizing the distinctive paper-cut technique where figures were crafted from jointed, painted segments to create a fluid, layered aesthetic. The series was created to adapt traditional folklore for a new generation, focusing on the themes of unity and perseverance as seven brothers with distinct superpowers joined forces to defeat mountain demons.
The character designs and animation style were overseen by veteran animators who aimed to balance educational moralism with high-stakes adventure. The show was received with significant enthusiasm by domestic audiences, becoming a cornerstone of Chinese cultural identity for children growing up in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Its success solidified the Shanghai Animation Film Studio’s reputation for blending traditional artistic crafts with engaging, serialized storytelling.
