For years, declining birth rates have forced what's left of the human race to cede more and more territory to other beings who have appeared to take advantage of the emptying ecological niche. Now, only a handful of humans remain among the remnants of civilization and Earth is dominated by faeries —tiny, ten-inch tall creatures of surprising intelligence. But humanity's importance isn't over quite yet, as young Watashi learns as she makes the decision to return to her hometown and assume her grandfather's position as an arbitrator between the races. Unfortunately, the job isn't going to be anywhere near as simple as she expected, and it's going to take a wisdom far beyond her years to achieve her most important mission.

Where it came from
Humanity Has Declined originated as a light novel series written by Romeo Tanaka, which was adapted into this 2012 television series by Studio AIC A.S.T.A. The narrative presents a whimsical yet satirical post-apocalyptic world where humanity has entered a period of slow decline, coexisting with diminutive, candy-loving beings known as Fairies. The series was designed to juxtapose its pastel-colored, surreal aesthetic with biting social commentary, exploring themes of resource scarcity and the absurdity of societal structures.
The animation direction was handled by Seiji Kishi, who sought to maintain the distinct, slightly surreal tone of the original source material. Upon its release, the series was received as a uniquely cerebral entry in the anime landscape, praised for its non-linear storytelling and its willingness to tackle darker philosophical subjects through a deceptively lighthearted lens. Its distinctive visual design and cynical humor have secured it a dedicated following among enthusiasts of experimental literary adaptations.
