Huyao Xiao Hongniang: Nan Guo

Huyao Xiao Hongniang, or Fox Spirit Matchmaker, began as a web manhua by Xiao Xin in 2012 before being adapted into a long-running ONA series by Haoliners Animation. The Nan Guo arc serves as a pivotal expansion of the series' established world-building, focusing on the intricate political and romantic entanglements within the Southern Kingdom. The studio utilized this installment to evolve their visual identity, moving toward more fluid character animation and atmospheric color palettes that lean into the ethereal, mythical aesthetic characteristic of the franchise.

The production sought to balance the series' signature blend of slapstick humor with the increasingly dramatic, multi-generational storytelling that defined later arcs. Directed by the creative teams at Haoliners, the design work focuses on elaborate traditional Chinese-inspired costumes and supernatural motifs to signify the characters' non-human lineage. The reception of the Nan Guo arc was largely positive, with fans and critics praising the studio's ambition in maintaining the high narrative stakes that have kept the franchise a staple of the Chinese animation landscape for over a decade.
