I Just Wanted to Say…

I Just Wanted to Say… is a short-form animated production released by the Japanese publisher Kodansha as part of an initiative to adapt literary works into modern visual media. It emerged during a period when major publishers were experimenting with digital-first content, leveraging the ONA format to reach younger audiences who consume media primarily through online platforms and mobile devices.

The production sought to capture the nuanced, often bittersweet emotional resonance of contemporary Japanese prose. The visual design emphasizes a minimalist aesthetic, focusing on soft color palettes and fluid character movement to prioritize atmosphere over complex animation sequences. Upon its release, it was noted by critics for its understated approach, effectively translating the internal monologue of the source material into a concise, accessible viewing experience.
