Where it came from
The Ikebukuro PR Anime was commissioned by the Toshima Ward office in Tokyo as part of an initiative to revitalize and promote the district. Released in 2017, the short animation was produced by Studio Shaft, known for its distinct visual style and avant-garde direction. The project sought to highlight the unique cultural facets of Ikebukuro, blending its status as a hub for otaku culture with its evolving urban landscape.
Under the direction of the studio, the design prioritized a polished, contemporary aesthetic that leaned into the signature abstract framing and fluid character animation Shaft is famous for. The project was intended to appeal to both local residents and tourists, framing the district as a vibrant center for art and community. Upon release, it was well-received for its artistic merit and its departure from typical, utilitarian municipal promotional videos.
